Objects created by and for women in Ghana, West Africa are on display in the Library Building gallery Jan. 12 to March 10. The exhibit honors the 50th anniversary of Ghana's Independence in 1957, and draws on works from several private collections of African art. The objects include pottery, textiles, beads, sculpture and other works that reflect the significant role women have played as entrepreneurs, mothers, rulers and artists throughout Ghana's history. The exhibit is coordinated by the Diversity Council and co-sponsored by Homowo African Arts and Cultures. Nii Quarcoopome, a Ghanaian art historian, will speak on campus during the exhibit. Quarcoopome is curator for the Department of African, Oceanic, and New World Cultures at the Detroit Institute of Arts. For more information about Quarcoopome's lecture, please contact 360/546-9580.

Colorful acrylic works on canvas by Portland artist Mark Werner will be on display through Feb. 2 to March 16 in the Engineering Life Sciences building gallery. His work reflects years of training in painting and printmaking with vivid colors and clean lines while incorporating organic and structural elements. Recent paintings involve incorporating the shapes of stones that have been cast aside from years of being tumbled around the sea with engaging colors. Werner received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and printmaking from the School of Art at Western Illinois University and studied painting at the Atellier Neo Medici outside of Paris in Verneuil, France.
