Explore Civility, political polarization and American democracy at 91勛圖窪蹋厙

VANCOUVER, Wash. Why Cant We Get Along? Civility, Political Polarization, and American Democracy, will be presented by Cornell W. Clayton at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at Washington State University Vancouver in the Dengerink Administration Building, Room 110. This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the lecture.

Clayton is the Claudius O. Johnson Distinguished Professor of Political Science at WSU Pullman and has been the director of the Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service since 2008. His research focuses on American political institutions, law and judicial politics.

Clayton is in favor of a more civil and productive political discourse. However, his own research on the topic, and his work with the Foley Institute on a series of civility and democracy projects, have convinced him that todays political acrimony is not only not that exceptional historically, but that the relationship between civility and democracy is more nuanced and complicated than most realize.

The first 50 guests on Tuesday night will receive a free copy of Civility and Democracy in America: A reasonable Understanding, edited by Clayton and Richard Elgar, assistant director of the Foley Institute.

The Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service was established at WSU to honor Tom Foley's more than 30 years of public service to both state and nation, and as the 49th Speaker of the House of Representatives. The institute fosters civic education, public service and public policy research in a nonpartisan, cross-disciplinary setting. The institute supports programs in the four substantive policy areas most relevant to Foley's long-term interests: agriculture policy, environment and natural resources, media and ethics, and government studies and public service.
