VANCOUVER, Wash. Washington State University Vancouver will celebrate Black History Month in February with a film screening/workshop and a musical performance/keynote address. Both events begin at 5 p.m. at Firstenburg Student Commons and are free and open to the public.
On Feb. 9, director Catherine Wigginton Greene will be on hand for a screening of her documentary film Im Not Racist再m I? The film documents a year-long series of conversations among a group of teenagers in New York City, who talk about race, privilege and strategies for confronting structural, systemic racism. A workshop led by Wigginton Greene will follow, and food will be available.
Wigginton Greene is director, writer and producer with Point Made Films. She also co-produced the film In 500 Words or Less, about the anxiety-filled college application process, and wrote and produced Adopted: We Can Do Better, an educational DVD series for adoptive families. Her appearance on campus is made possible by a grant from the 91勛圖窪蹋厙 Diversity Council.
The Feb. 23 presentation is titled Black History in Action: Past, Present and Future. It will feature a performance by Kukatonon African Childrens Dance Troupe from Portland, local musical performances, and a keynote address by Sky Wilson, instructor of English at 91勛圖窪蹋厙. Food will be available.
Attendees at both events will receive parking passes at the entrance of Orange lots 1, 2 and 3. For the Feb. 23 event, attendees are asked to bring a donation for the Cougar Food Pantry.
