VANCOUVER, Wash. - Glass artists Jane Cote and Nancy Macklin are displaying several pieces of their fused-glass art in the Washington State University Vancouver Library through June 24. The pieces in the exhibit take mostly utilitarian forms such as plates, platters and bowls. Using design elements, color and texture, Cote and Macklin specialize in turning functional objects into art objects.
The fused-glass process involves assembling layers of glass that may include cut glass pieces, crushed or ground glass. The layered glass is heated in a kiln until the pieces fuse together. The artists then work with the glass to achieve the desired shapes and effects.
Macklin, who is director at Treatment Services Northwest and resides in Camas, introduced Cote, who is director of 91³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø's College of Business and resides in Vancouver, to fused glass several years ago. They have been working together ever since. They continue to grow as artists by experimenting with different styles and learning new techniques.
91³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø art galleries are open from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday. Admission is free. Parking is available at parking meters or in the Blue Daily Pay lot for $3. For more information, contact Erin Dengerink Madarang at madarang@vancouver.wsu.edu or 360-546-9551.
