Vancouver, Wash. - Two grants totaling more than $180,000 will ensure solid research to help protect endangered Fender's Blue Butterflies in Oregon's Willamette Valley.
Washington State University Vancouver researcher Cheryl Schultz received $37,000 from an Oregon Conservation Strategy Implementation Grant from Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and $146,000 from Oregon Endangered Species Recovery Projects Grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to continue her work studying the ecology of the small, endangered butterflies. The USFWS grant follows $46,000 in 2006 for this work.
Schultz has been tracking movement of the butterflies through several known habitats of prairies and wooded foothills in the Corvallis, Ore., area, gathering data to contribute federal, state, county and private landowner conservation efforts.
"We've had enthusiastic interest from private land owners who are very interested in conservation," said Schultz. "Together with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, we are all working together to build a strong conservation strategy."
