Join WSU Alumni in Volunteering for the Oregon Food Bank

CONTACT:

VANCOUVER, Wash. Washington State University alumni are invited to volunteer for the spring Cougs in the Community project from 1 3 p.m. March 26. The Washington State University Vancouver Alumni Advisory Board has selected the Oregon Food Bank as the beneficiary. Volunteers will unload crates of donated food and stock shelves.

More than 15,000 WSU alumni live in Southwest Washington and the Portland metropolitan region and all are invited to volunteer. This is a family friendly event.

Children age six and older are welcome to help. The Oregon Food Bank, located at 7900 Northeast 33rd Drive in Portland, can accommodate up to 50 volunteers. Space is still available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like to participate, please email van.alumni@vancouver.wsu.edu or call 360-546-9600.

Oregon Food Bank works with a cooperative, statewide network of partner agencies to distribute emergency food to hungry families. In addition, the organization works to fight hunger's root causes through public policy, outreach and education.

According to the Oregon Food Bank, one in five Oregonians struggles with hunger, and 33 percent of those receiving emergency food are children. Children who are hungry get sick more often and have more trouble learning in school

We are excited to bring WSU to the Portland area with this project, said Jeff Day, Cougs in the Community project chair. We hope alumni who live in Oregon will join us!

Cougs in the Community began in fall 2009, and projects are coordinated two times each year. So far Cougar volunteers have benefitted Second Step Housing, Northwest Childrens Outreach and Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation.
