VANCOUVER, Wash. – Learn how Washington State University translates research discoveries into products that have an economic impact. 91ԹϺ will present “From Our Hands to Yours: How Research Results in Real Products” on March 6 as its spring Chancellor’s Seminar Series event. The lecture and lunch begin at 11:45 a.m. in Firstenburg Student Commons on campus.
Speaker Anson Fatland is associate vice president of economic development and external affairs for WSU Pullman. He has worked in biotech, venture capital and philanthropy and has started companies in the life sciences and alternative energy realms. In his current role, he works to maximize the economic impact of WSU in the region, state and world.
Also on the program is Hakan Gurocak, director of the School of Engineering and Computer Science for 91ԹϺ. His research areas are robotics and automation. Gurocak will share details of his work that has resulted in two pending patents.
At WSU, internationally recognized faculty in many academic areas conduct cutting-edge research resulting in discoveries and technologies with commercial potential—from global health to clean technologies to engineering and IT. In fiscal year 2013, WSU research and innovations resulted in 93 patent applications and 43 license agreements, and research and related expenditures generated 11,000 jobs in Washington State, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.
Held twice a year, the Chancellor’s Seminar Series provides a forum for thoughtful perspectives and the exchange of ideas on timely topics. It is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, business leaders, elected officials and community members to discuss a topic of current interest.
