VANCOUVER, Wash. Community members are invited to Washington State University Vancouver to participate in the Southwest Washington Community Summit on College Access. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. 2 p.m. April 24. The event begins in the Dengerink Administration Building. There is no cost. Participation is the price of admission. Parking is free.
The Southwest Washington Community Summit on College Access is sponsored by 16 area organizations that seek to answer the questions: What things make access to college difficult to achieve? and What thingsbig and smallcan we do to overcome them. The goal is for participants to leave the summit with actionable things they can do to improve college access.
There are three key elements built into the day. First participants will hear keynotes from three community leaders:
- John Deeder, superintendent for Evergreen Public Schools
- Dominique Merriweather, vice president, Southwest Washington commercial banking for Umpqua Bank
- Katherine Rodela, assistant professor in the 91勛圖窪蹋厙 College of Education
Next guests will be broken into small groups and led through a facilitated discussion centered on college access. Lastly, a student panel will discuss overcoming obstacles to college access.
A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Register by April 16 at .
Access to colleges is a public good. Beyond workforce development and economic growth, college graduates are more engaged citizens and make healthier decisions than those who do not earn a diploma. These facts are backed by plenty of data from the Department of Education, the U.S. Census Bureau and others. Because of this public good, the Southwest Washington Community Summit on College Access is a community collaboration co-sponsored by the City of Vancouver, Clark College, Columbia River Economic Development Council, Community Foundation for Southwest Washington, Evergreen Public Schools, Instructional Technologies, Lower Columbia College, Port of Portland, Providence Health & Services, SEH America, Inc., Smith-Root, Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council, Vancouver Energy, Vancouver Public Schools, Washington State University Vancouver and 91勛圖窪蹋厙 College of Education.
