Vancouver, Wash. - The Vancouver community can take advantage of insights and advice from guest speakers in the ‘Writing as a Profession' course at Washington State University Vancouver. The free public presentations are from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays (dates below) in the Multimedia Classroom building, room 6. Parking on campus is free after 7 p.m.
Jan. 17 - Karen Karbo is the author of three New York Times Notable Books. "The Stuff of Life," about caring for her father during the last years of his life, was a People Magazine Critic's Choice, a selection of the Satellite Sisters Radio Book Club, a winner of the Oregon Book Award for Creative-Nonfiction, and also a Times Notable Book.
Jan. 31 - Gary Braasch, noted photographer and photojournalist, covers environmental issues and conservation, biodiversity and field science, climate change and global warming in stock photography and assignments. His newest book, "Earth Under Fire: How Global Warming is Changing the World" documents through essays and photographs the rapid climate change around the world.
Feb. 14 - Tess Gallagher is a poet, essayist, novelist and playwright born in Port Angeles, Washington. Her first collection of poems, Instructions to the Double, won the 1976 Elliston Book Award for "Best book of poetry published by a small press." In 1984, she published the collection Willingly, which consists of poems written to and about her third husband, author Raymond Carver, who died in 1988.
Feb. 28 - Nigel Jaquiss has been a reporter at Willamette Week in Portland since January 1998. In 2005, he received the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. Jaquiss graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in English in 1984 and from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1997. His articles continue to expose corruption in politics in the region.
Mar. 20 - Gill Dennis, teacher and screenwriter, co-wrote the screenplay for the Academy Award-winning film, "Walk the Line," a biopic about the extraordinary life and career of singer Johnny Cash. He co-wrote the Academy Award nominated documentary, "The Man on Lincoln's Nose," about the illustrious film designer Robert Boyle.
