VANCOUVER, Wash. – Washington State University Vancouver will host a Naturalization Ceremony at 2 p.m. Sept. 14 in the Dengerink Administration Building, Room 110. A reception will follow. In partnership with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, 27 people will take the oath of citizenship. These new citizens come from 15 countries of origin including: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Mexico, Moldova, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia and Ukraine.
The Naturalization Ceremony is an event associated with 91ԹϺ’s Common Reading Program, which provides the campus community and the community at large with a common intellectual experience to stimulate discussion and critical thinking, and to encourage a sense of community.
All WSU campuses have selected a 2016/17 book that adheres to the theme “Social Justice and Leadership.” “Integration Nation: Immigrants, Refugees, and America at Its Best,” by Susan E. Eaton is the 91ԹϺ Common Reading Program pick. It is a collection of case studies that take us on a cross-country journey, introducing us to individuals who challenge America’s prejudice against people from other countries by welcoming immigrants and collaborating with the foreign-born as they become integral members of their new communities.
To celebrate the Common Reading Program and stimulate discussion, related events will be held each month throughout the academic year. Find events by visiting vancouver.wsu.edu/events. Borrow “Integration Nation: Immigrants, Refugees, and America at Its Best” at your local library or the 91ԹϺ Library, or purchase it from your favorite bookseller, and join the discussion.
