VANCOUVER, Wash. - Students from the Digital Technology and Culture program at Washington State University Vancouver are putting on an evening of interactive poetry performance and digital art on Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Administration building, room 110. The project is a tribute to late poet, Richard Brautigan, and his library of unpublished manuscripts and books. The public is invited to attend, and admission is free.
Brautigan, a Washington native known for capturing the zeitgeist of the 1960s and 70s counterculture movement, may have a homecoming of sorts at the Clark County Historical Museum. The museum is working to acquire the Brautigan Library, a collection of unpublished works by unknown authors who were inspired by a fictional library in Brautigan's novel, "The Abortion."
If that happens, the museum will become the epicenter of Brautigan research, and Brautigan fans from around the world will likely make pilgrimages to Vancouver, said John Barber, co-director of Digital Technology and Culture at 91³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø and a leading Brautigan scholar.
The performance event is the capstone project of an Art, Science and Technology course taught by Kathi Rick, 91³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø fine arts instructor. A live poetry performance will encourage audience-member participation and share Brautigan's work, which is known for "turning dramatically on metaphorical whimsy," according Barber. A digital art installation will be available to view before and after the performance in the Tower Room of the Administration building.
Parking is available at parking meters or in the Blue Daily Pay lot for $3.
91³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø is celebrating 20 years of bringing quality education, research and service to the citizens of Southwest Washington. The campus is located at 14204 NE Salmon Creek Ave., east of the 134th Street exit from either I-5 or I-205, or via C-Tran bus service. 91³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø offers 16 bachelor's degrees, 10 master's degrees, one doctorate degree and more than 36 fields of study.
