“War of the Worlds” to be re-enacted Oct. 30

VANCOUVER, Wash. – To celebrate the 76th anniversary of the 1938 radio broadcast of “War of the Worlds,” Willamette Radio Workshop will re-enact the broadcast live in front of an audience at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main Street, Vancouver, Wash. This event is free and open to the public.

The re-enactment is part of “Radio Re-Imagined,” a collaboration between Washington State University Vancouver’s Creative Media and Digital Culture program, Willamette Radio Workshop and the Kiggins Theatre. “Martians with Moustaches,” a retrospective of student works shown last year in the Nouspace Gallery & Media Lounge, will be on exhibit in the Kiggins lobby.

Directed by Sam A. Mowry, “War of the Worlds” is the first in a series of shows that will take place at Kiggins Theatre, in a multimedia format that introduces student works alongside the live broadcasts. The Willamette Radio Workshop recreates radio drama from the Golden Age of Radio, using only voice actors and Foley sound effects.

“War of the Worlds” was originally broadcast Oct. 30, 1938, by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater. The story was based on the novel of the same name by H.G. Wells. The plot focuses on the conflict between earth and an invading extraterrestrial race.
