VANCOUVER, WASH. A collection of local landscape photography by Northwest newcomer Laura Evancich is on display in the Engineering and Life Science building at Washington State University Vancouver through April 13.
Originally from Boston, Mass., Evancich relocated to Vancouver, Wash. in hopes of combining a love of the outdoors with photography.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a park ranger. I have always loved the outdoors and decided I wanted to live and work in the woods. Unfortunately I wasnt the best science student, so I switched gears and chose graphic design, said Evancich who also serves as graphic designer in the department of marketing and communications. I decided to somehow find a way to combine my love of the outdoors with a career. If I couldnt do it as my job, I would live in a place where I could work, play outdoors on the weekends and find a happy balance.
Evancich graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2004 with a bachelor of arts in English literature and fine arts photography. She found what makes her the happiest is when she can combine any two passions. In her professional life, thats photography and graphic design. In her personal life, its photography and fly fishing.
I feel I have done a good job as a photographer if you can imagine yourself in the scene Ive created and it makes you take pause. If you can feel the dry heat of a dusty bike trail in the desert, hear the rocks raking against the sand heading back to the ocean, or wish you had grabbed your fly rod and raincoat before heading into the rainforest, then Ive done a better job, said Evancich.
