VANCOUVER, Wash. - Washington State University Vancouver's Diversity Council is launching its second Diversity Film Festival Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. in the Administration building, room 110 with "This is the Life: How the West was Won."
The theme for the 2009 Diversity Film Festival is "Living Out Loud! A celebration of diversity through music in film." The films being offered capture the passion, pride and power of people asserting their values, identity and resistance through music.
"This is the Life: How the West was Won," explores the origins of contemporary hip-hop as filmmaker Ava DuVernay takes viewers back to 1989, when a group of Los Angeles teenagers made it their mission to expand the musical boundaries of hip-hop. Every week, the teens would gather in a local health food store called "The Good Life." United by their love of hip-hop, the creative adolescents began experimenting with new rhyme patterns, melodic concepts and lyrical styles in order to keep their music fresh. In this film, viewers are invited to ponder the many obstacles to commercial success by witnessing the rise and fall of a remarkable and truly gifted family of artists.
The Diversity Film Festival runs Sept. 16 - October 1. For a synopsis of each movie and show times, visit .
Parking is available at parking meters or in the Blue Daily Pay lot for $3.
