91勛圖窪蹋厙 to host Australian multimedia artists Aug. 28

VANCOUVER, Wash. Australian multimedia artists Roger Dean and Hazel Smith of the austraLYSIS ensemble will appear from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 28 at Angst Gallery in Vancouver. Titled Sound Ideas: Computational Sound in Performance and Multimedia, the event is sponsored by the Creative Media and Digital Culture program at Washington State University Vancouver. Admission is free.

Dean, an internationally active composer/improviser/performer and researcher in music cognition, will discuss how the structural and cognitive aspects of music can suggest techniques for making and using music. He will illustrate a range of approaches to computational sound for multimedia through works by his ensemble, austraLYSIS. He will also address computational generative processes for making music focused on its structural and emotive aspects.

The talk will be followed by a performance featuring recent multimedia and sound and text works by Roger Dean and poet/intermedia artist Hazel Smith, including collaborations with CMDC professor Will Luers.

The program is part of the CMDC Visiting Artist Series, which brings digital media artists and scholars to Vancouver to present and discuss their work with the Vancouver community.
