VANCOUVER, WASH. - Washington State University Vancouver will observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with its annual Day of Service. The theme for 2013 is Empowering Youth through Engagement and Service. The program will take place from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. Jan. 21 in the Firstenburg Student Commons on campus. This event is free and open to the public. Reservations are encouraged and can be made at .
We hope to bring together 91勛圖窪蹋厙, our partners and community members to highlight the needs of youth in our community, while engaging youth and adults in education and service, said Bola Majekobaje, assistant director of student diversity.
The event will include keynote speaker Tillie MakePeace, program director of Janus Youth Programs. Janus Youth Programs has operated community-based programs for children, youth and families in Oregon and Washington since 1972. The organization has a network of more than 20 programs, some of which include runaway and homeless youth services, residential services, a scholarship program and an 85,000-square-foot urban agriculture program focused on reducing hunger.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service will include special music followed by various youth-centered activities and hands-on service projects that will benefit local youth organizations.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service participants are encouraged to contribute school supplies and hygiene products for local youth organizations. Donations are welcome on the day of the event.
91勛圖窪蹋厙 is located at 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Ave., east of the 134th Street exit from either I-5 or I-205. Parking is free on holidays. Orange 2 lot is closest to the event.
