VANCOUVER, Wash. - Washington State University Vancouver is hosting a Day of Service to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 18. The day will begin with a short, inspirational program including the words of Thabiti Lewis, Ph.D., professor of English at 9 a.m. at the Firstenburg Student Commons. From there, volunteers will split into groups to perform a variety of community-service projects throughout the community.

Community-service projects include outdoor activities with the Stream Team, planting trees with the Vancouver Watershed Council, making cards for Doernbecher Children's Hospital and meal service with Share Vancouver. Time commitments range from two to four hours depending on the project. Details about the organizations and the activities can be found at

Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to participate to make Jan 18 a "day on" rather than a day off. Everyone must RSVP at to ensure service projects get assigned appropriately. Call Bola Majekobaje with questions at 360-546-9568.
