Vancouver, Wash. - Students entering grades 7 to 12 in the Vancouver area will have the chance to study topics from computer animation to journalism to biomedical science this summer at Washington State University Vancouver.
The university's Center for Youth Workforce Preparation is offering the Summer PaCE Academy, Aug. 6 - 10, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
"We want to give local students a taste of college through an informal education experience," said center director Mike Holroyd. "The sessions will promote critical thinking, inquiry and exploration. The age range of students will help promote teamwork and problem solving."
Morning "Tracks," taught by university staff, faculty and community experts, include Art with Computers, Exploring Other Worlds, Journalism and Media, Biomedical Science, Engineers Make It Happen, The Brain and Body, Environmental Science.
Afternoon sessions will feature college and career preparation activities, with guest speakers including Microsoft internet child safety expert and mom, Linda Criddle. Criddle will also be offering a $10 session for parents Aug. 6, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Registration will be required.
The cost of the program is $85, and a limited number of scholarships are available. Space is limited. To register or for more information, visit or call 360/546-9222.
The program was piloted in summer 2006 as a one-day event, but was so successful, Holroyd and his partners are offering a full week this year.
