VANCOUVER, Wash. – It’s time to shine up your fangs and get your silver crosses ready: A Transylvanian Halloween treat is coming to Vancouver during a live production of “Dracula” by the Willamette Radio Workshop at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Kiggins Theatre in downtown Vancouver.
The performance is part of Washington State University Vancouver Creative Media and Digital Culture professor John Barber’s Re-Imagined Radio project. Each Re-Imagined Radio production begins with a live re-creation of a drama with voice actors and Foley sound artists. The award-winning Willamette Radio Workshop is providing the voices. Digital and multimedia components are added to increase opportunities for audience engagement.
Directed by Sam A. Mowry, “Dracula” is based on the 1938 performance by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on the Air. The original radio drama was adapted from Bram Stoker's novel “Dracula,” first published in 1897.
“’Dracula’ is considered one of the greatest horror novels ever written,” Barber said. “The novel examines society's fears of the unnatural during late 19th and 20th century Victorian society. Over time, the focus of its many interpretations has come to be how abnormality can evolve from one source and infect the surrounding society with discord, misfortunes and evil. Dracula, the vampire, infects others with his evil."
Though the original was on radio, the only way to hear the local reboot is to be in the live audience. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and costumers are encouraged. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children age 12 and younger. Concessions, beer and wine will be available for purchase. The Kiggins Theatre is located at 1011 Main St., Vancouver, Wash.
