VANCOUVER, Wash. – Students of the Washington State University Vancouver Creative Media and Digital Culture program have created a transmedia education environment for the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center. “Life Renewed” can be previewed at 8 p.m. on Dec. 18 at the Nouspace Gallery co-located with Angst Gallery at 1015 Main St. in downtown Vancouver.
“Life Renewed” includes an interactive installation, two augmented reality banners, a mobile app and an educational activity book with augmented reality capability, all aimed at teaching visitors about the renewal of animal and plant life at Mount St. Helens since its eruption on May 18, 1980.
Twenty-three students in a senior seminar course used the latest new media platforms––augmented reality, virtual reality and 3D animation––to complete the project.
“Life Renewed” will be on permanent exhibit at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center at Coldwater Station beginning in April. It will travel to various locations until its permanent installation at the center. The Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing understanding and stewardship of the earth through science, education and exploration of volcanic landscapes.
