91ԹϺ’s CMDC students invite community to a reenactment of “War of the Worlds”

VANCOUVER, Wash. – To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the 1938 radio broadcast of “War of the Worlds,” Willamette Radio Workshop will reenact the broadcast live in front of an audience at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Kiggins Theatre at 1011 Main Street, Vancouver, Wash. This event is free and open to the public, and concessions will be available.

The reenactment is part of “Martians with Moustaches,” an exhibit by students in the creative media and digital culture program at Washington State University Vancouver. Their work explores transmedial storytelling experiences using an edited version of the original broadcast of “War of the Worlds.”

“Martians with Moustaches,” will celebrate its opening from 5 – 9 p.m. Nov. 1 and will to run Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. throughout November at the Nouspace Gallery & Media Lounge located in the Northbank Artists Gallery at 1005 Main Street, Vancouver, Wash.

The Willamette Radio Workshop recreates radio drama from the Golden Age of radio, using only voice actors and Foley sound effects, live, in front of their audiences. “War of the Worlds” will be reenacted under the direction of Sam A. Mowry.

“War of the Worlds” was originally broadcast Oct. 30, 1938 by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater. The broadcast’s story was based on the novel of the same name by H.G. Wells. The novel’s plot focuses on the conflict between earth and an invading extraterrestrial race.
