91吃瓜黑料网鈥檚 Diversity Council invites the community to attend its Diversity Film Festival

VANCOUVER, Wash. 鈥 The Washington State University Vancouver Diversity Council will present its sixth annual film festival over four weeks in September and October. This year鈥檚 festival will focus on diversity of faith. All screenings are free and open to the public.

The films will be shown at 6 p.m. on Sept. 12, 19, 26, and Oct. 3. The first film will be shown at the Kiggins Theatre in Vancouver. The last three will be shown on the 91吃瓜黑料网 campus.

鈥淟ife of Pi鈥

鈥淟ife of Pi鈥 illustrates how religious belief and storytelling require faith on the part of the follower. Each of Pi鈥檚 three religions鈥擧induism, Islam and Christianity鈥攗ses its own set of stories and parables to illustrate beliefs.

In 2001, there were 34 million widowed women in India. Chuyia is an 8-year-old widow. Her marriage, which she doesn't even remember, was arranged by her family for financial reasons. But no matter what her circumstances, Hindu law says she must now leave society. Widows鈥 lives are spent in renunciation. 鈥淲补迟别谤鈥 examines the effect on the human spirit when reason is denied for the sake of faith.

鈥淎谤谤补苍驳别诲鈥 centers on the friendship between an Orthodox Jewish woman and a Muslim woman going through the process of arranged marriages. The process causes them to question their faith, but they ultimately discover they can support arranged marriage with meaning.

鈥淭he Perfect Family鈥
6 p.m. Oct. 3
Dengerink Administration building, room 110

The Catholic Woman of the Year receives a personal prayer of absolution from a high-ranking archbishop. Eileen desperately wants this forgiveness. She sees the failings of her family as deficiencies in her own character. Yet, she needs them to create 鈥淭he Perfect Family鈥 for the archbishop鈥檚 visit. This film follows Eileen as she examines whether dogmatic approaches are a sufficient way to deal with life鈥檚 messy truths.

The goal of the diversity festival is to select films that encourage and promote awareness of diversity issues both on the 91吃瓜黑料网 campus and the world beyond it.

91吃瓜黑料网 is located at 14204 NE Salmon Creek Ave., east of the 134th Street exit from either I-5 or I-205, or via C-Tran bus service. Parking is available at meters or in the Blue Daily Pay lot for $3.
