VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Women's Empowerment Coalition of Washington State University Vancouver is offering a full day of lectures, workshops and artistic expression in honor of women. The event, "Women in Art, Academia and Community" will be held 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., March 24 on campus in the Firstenburg Student Commons.

An eclectic and inspiring set of events will fill the day. Some presentations offer historical perspective such as Laurie Mercier, 91³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø professor of history, presenting "The Second Wave Feminist Movement during the 1960s and 1970s" or 91³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø student of history Paul Field's discussion of "Women's Role in the Portland-Vancouver Shipyards During WWII." Some topics are relevant to today. Midwife, Hope Medford, will cover "Women's Empowerment Begins at Birth: Local and Global Impact, Taking Back our Power Through Knowledge." The music of the Harney Marimba Band and Hope Medford and the Women's Drum Circle will provide lunchtime entertainment.

Cherry Muhanji, professor, author and activist, will wrap up the day with her keynote at 4:15 p.m. "Up Close and Personal: The Evolution of Empowerment," will address rhythm-the rhythm of the mother, the suppressed poet and the worker. At 71 years of age, Muhanji says the rhythm of scholar, artist and activist has saved her life many times.

"Women in Art, Academia and Community" is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome to spend the whole day or any part of the day at the event. Find a schedule of events at . Find parking at meters or for $3 (cash only) in the Blue Daily Pay lot.
