Modern Masculinity and Mental Health Workshop

-

This workshop is designed to challenge the harmful gender stereotypes that often underpin the cycles of sexual assault and domestic violence. By fostering open dialogue about emotions, vulnerability, and empathy, we aim to dismantle the "power-over" dynamics central to patriarchy. Redefining traditional views of strength allows us to address the root causes of gender-based harm, promoting a culture of consent and emotional safety where every individual’s boundaries and experiences are valued. To ensure accessibility and collective care, the event will feature de-stressing activities and comfort food, recognizing that discussing trauma requires a grounded environment. Through the club partnerships of Survivors United (SU) and Veteran and Military Affiliated Students (VMAC), this workshop marks the launch of an ongoing support group as a vital resource for survivors and allies seeking continued connection, resource-sharing, and long-term community healing. As bell hooks reminds us, “Patriarchy demands of all males that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves.” This event directly counters that harm, acknowledging that when we suppress empathy, we create a vacuum where violence can persist. By helping our community unlearn these restrictive norms, we empower everyone to embrace authentic expression and mutual respect.
